We understand that interestingly, the colour of the stain implies the age of the algae colony. When first established, the colony, carried via spores in the air, will take on a green colour. It will not be visible for the first couple of months, but gradually it will spread, especially in areas where rain runs down the face of the render. This moist warm environment is the perfect ecosystem for algae growth and the issue can become endemic before long.
Green staining implies a juvenile colony, whilst red or black implies a more mature, established colony that will be more difficult to remove.

Algae is one type of organic issue, another is lichen growths and whilst less common they can prove the more dangerous problem. Lichen growths take the form of small circular and brittle growths that are often green in colour. The cling to the face of render in a way that makes removal more difficult, they also undermine the integrity of the render and a more likely to cause damage over the long term as they dig into the facades membrane. Lichen generally forms in patches, and is raised on the surface, rather than utterly flat like algae staining.
We have encountered these two issues hundreds of times, and been consistently successful in eliminating the problem every time. For organic issues, we use a strong and specific biocide that effectively targets the root causes of these issues, frequently extending the life of our cleans by years.
Many teams simply apply a bleach to the render, however we find this method to be less effective and potentially more damaging to the render than our more targeted method. Bleach approaches often simply change the colour of the algae and is poorly effective against lichen, moreover, it exposes your delicate render to a range of chemicals that can eat away at the surface and form crevices.
The Process
Over the years we have built a system that allows us to consistently provide a cost effective, quick and effective solution to any and all render cleaning issues. It is our four-step process:
Step 1 : Initial Consultation
A distinct aspect of our service that sets us apart is our commitment to close communication with our clients. Before we offer any quote, we will meet with you at the property to discuss the main issues, any caveats you have and how we could go about the cleaning.
Step 2 : Biocide Application
After we have met and understand your preferences we will arrive at the job on the agreed date and first apply the biocide to attack any organic issues. This method has a 100% success rate and after a number of coats and rinses, we find that the issues, often quite dramatically, evaporate.
Step 3 : Soft wash
Following every coat of biocide we will power wash the render façade to lift off the weakened algae or lichen. This also removes common dirt and soot from the rest of the render, breathing new life into dulled colours. Being so experienced with the use of our power washers, we understand exactly how to bet apply them and they pose no risk to the render, cleaning only the surface and having no chance to damage the render membrane.
Step 4 : Closing Consultation
Once all work has been completed, we will meet with you again to discuss how we completed the work, any issues we found and advice we have to extend the life of the clean.
